150 helpless people rescued in Karnali

One hundred and fifty helpless people have been rescued as part of the drive to making the Karnali State free from street beggars. These underprivileged people had been eking out their living begging on the street and public places.

Karnali state is being declared a State without beggars amidst a programme here today. This campaign is being implemented in collaboration with all the local levels, stakeholders and the Manav Sewa Ashram.

With this declaration, Karnali will become the first State in the country to be declared ‘Beggar-free State’.

Secretary at the Karnali State government’s ministry of social development, Dr Man Bahadur BK said preparations have been made for declaring the State as free from helpless people who live by begging in the streets.

A meeting of the Karnali State Council of Ministers on December 24, 2019 decided to declare the State as ‘Beggar-free State’. Similarly, the second meeting of the Karnali State Coordination Council on December 27, 2019 had passed a resolution to this effect.

The State government has constituted a Follow-up and Monitoring Group under the chairmanship of the chief of the District Coordination Committee for the implementation of this campaign.

Fifty helpless people have been sheltering at the Manav Sewa Ashram in Surkhet at present. Ashram coordinator Shreejana Oli said out of 150 helpless people rescued from the street in one year, 100 have been repatriated with their families.
