Daughter security becoming effective

The daughter security programme is proving to become effective and fruitful. The initiative has been launched by the Kanka Sundari rural municipality.

As per the programme, the rural municipality opens a bank account in the name of every girl born in the rural municipality. It starts with a deposit of Rs. 1,000 and adds Rs. 500 every month.

"The little help from the government has been very useful, and I can use it to educate my daughter," says Shanti Sanjyal of Sanjyalwada in ward no. 8 of the rural municipality. The number of people coming to open bank accounts has been increasing after the programme came into implementation. The priority is given to the mothers to open the account, according to Kumari Bank Manager Bhim Bahadur Dhami.

Chief Administrative Officer of the rural municipality Ganga Ram Sapkota said that the State government introduced this programme in order to uplift Karnali that remains behind in the human development index. Ending poverty and child marriage and increasing access to education are the major goals of the programme.

A condition put forth for inclusion in the programme is that the girl has to complete at least secondary level education and cannot marry before reaching 20.
