In 2017 election of Surunga Municipality (Saptari district), candidate Mukti Nath Chaudhary of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 5,279 (30.56%) votes out of total votes of 17,276 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Ram Narayan Chaudhary of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 5,069 (22.47%) of votes. The rest of 9 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 6,928 (20.05) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Binda Kumari Pasman of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 5,036 (29.66%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Sabina Dotel of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 5,004 (22.73%) of votes and came in second position. Other 6 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 6,937 (20.43) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 356 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 198 (55.62%) males and 158 (44.38%) females. Moreover, there were total 76 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 11 wards. Same as, total 131 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 67 females and 63 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
