In 2017 election of Sunkoshi Rural Municipality (Udayapur district), candidate Major Kumar Rai of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) secured 1,347 (34.14%) votes out of total votes of 3,945 and was elected as a Chairman. The first runner-up candidate was Bhalraj Rai of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 1,281 (24.21%) of votes. The rest of 2 candidates for the position of Chairman secured combined 1,317 (16.69) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Vice-Chairman, candidate Ramila Rai of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 1,527 (39.80%) and was elected as a Vice-Chairman, while Laxmi Devi Karki Raut of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 1,239 (23.10%) of votes and came in second position. Other 1 candidates who contested for Vice-Chairman secured combined 1,071 (13.96) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 93 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 58 (62.37%) males and 35 (37.63%) females. Moreover, there were total 19 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 5 wards. Same as, total 37 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 15 females and 15 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
