In 2017 election of Saptakoshi Municipality (Saptari district), candidate Uttam Kumar Sharma of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 3,039 (36.80%) votes out of total votes of 8,258 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Dhruva Karki of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) who secured 1,883 (16.67%) of votes. The rest of 6 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 3,336 (20.20) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Asha Chaudhary of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 3,227 (39.42%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Raj Kumar Chaudhary of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) secured 2,199 (19.27%) of votes and came in second position. Other 7 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 2,761 (16.86) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 272 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 146 (53.68%) males and 126 (46.32%) females. Moreover, there were total 60 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 11 wards. Same as, total 98 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 48 females and 49 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
