In 2017 election of Rong Rural Municipality (Ilam district), candidate Shamsher Rai of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 3,985 (45.96%) votes out of total votes of 8,671 and was elected as a Chairman. The first runner-up candidate was Brihaspati Khatiwada of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 3,672 (29.01%) of votes. The rest of 6 candidates for the position of Chairman secured combined 1,014 (5.85) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Vice-Chairman, candidate Chandra Kala Rai of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 4,102 (48.19%) and was elected as a Vice-Chairman, while Bishnu Maya Khawas of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 3,667 (29.07%) of votes and came in second position. Other 2 candidates who contested for Vice-Chairman secured combined 743 (4.36) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 114 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 72 (63.16%) males and 42 (36.84%) females. Moreover, there were total 25 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 6 wards. Same as, total 40 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 19 females and 18 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
