In 2017 election of Punarbas Municipality (Kanchanpur district), candidate Jeevan Raj Thapa of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 6,040 (32.67%) votes out of total votes of 18,488 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Bir Bahadur Thapa of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) who secured 5,514 (22.48%) of votes. The rest of 6 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 6,934 (18.75) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Sharada Sharma (bista) of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 6,366 (34.87%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Bhuliya Kumari Rana of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 5,391 (21.89%) of votes and came in second position. Other 6 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 6,500 (17.80) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 271 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 160 (59.04%) males and 111 (40.96%) females. Moreover, there were total 58 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 11 wards. Same as, total 100 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 51 females and 46 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
