In 2017 election of Phalelung Rural Municipality (Panchthar district), candidate Sancha Kumar Kerung of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 2,996 (33.39%) votes out of total votes of 8,973 and was elected as a Chairman. The first runner-up candidate was Mahendra Hang Jabegu of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) who secured 2,834 (23.68%) of votes. The rest of 8 candidates for the position of Chairman secured combined 3,143 (17.51) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Vice-Chairman, candidate Hima Adhikari of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 2,981 (33.75%) and was elected as a Vice-Chairman, while Kabita Thamsuhang of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) secured 2,845 (24.08%) of votes and came in second position. Other 3 candidates who contested for Vice-Chairman secured combined 3,007 (17.02) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 175 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 101 (57.71%) males and 74 (42.29%) females. Moreover, there were total 37 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 8 wards. Same as, total 63 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 34 females and 26 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
