In 2017 election of Nagrain Municipality (Dhanusa district), candidate Parmeshwor Yadav of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 5,029 (43.90%) votes out of total votes of 11,455 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Rambabu Panjiyar of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 4,071 (24.70%) of votes. The rest of 15 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 2,355 (10.28) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Ranju Kumari Shah of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 4,849 (42.54%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Radha Devi Yadav of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 4,189 (25.78%) of votes and came in second position. Other 4 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 2,361 (10.36) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 211 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 135 (63.98%) males and 76 (36.02%) females. Moreover, there were total 51 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 9 wards. Same as, total 69 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 36 females and 32 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
