In 2017 election of Mithila Municipality (Dhanusa district), candidate Hari Narayan Mahato of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 6,740 (42.00%) votes out of total votes of 16,046 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Rajkumar Mahato of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 5,178 (22.72%) of votes. The rest of 8 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 4,128 (12.86) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Tara Kumari Basnet of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 6,665 (47.25%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Min Bahadur Jargha Magar of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) secured 6,338 (30.51%) of votes and came in second position. Other 4 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 1,103 (3.91) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 213 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 133 (62.44%) males and 80 (37.56%) females. Moreover, there were total 54 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 11 wards. Same as, total 72 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 36 females and 35 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
