In 2017 election of Mechinagar Municipality (Jhapa district), candidate Bimal Acharya of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 20,776 (41.79%) votes out of total votes of 49,711 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Bishnu Prasad Prasai of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 19,192 (27.23%) of votes. The rest of 7 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 9,743 (9.80) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Meena Kumari Pokhrel of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 20,016 (40.42%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Durga Khatiwada of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 19,106 (27.48%) of votes and came in second position. Other 6 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 10,392 (10.49) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 377 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 233 (61.80%) males and 144 (38.20%) females. Moreover, there were total 86 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 15 wards. Same as, total 146 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 73 females and 55 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
