In 2017 election of Maulapur Municipality (Rautahat district), candidate Rina Kumari Shah of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) secured 3,912 (42.11%) votes out of total votes of 9,291 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Rabindra Patel of Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RasJPN) who secured 2,168 (16.42%) of votes. The rest of 17 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 3,211 (17.28) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Gauri Shankar Prasad of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) secured 3,879 (43.93%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Rina Devi of Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RasJPN) secured 1,566 (12.32%) of votes and came in second position. Other 4 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 3,385 (19.17) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 254 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 165 (64.96%) males and 89 (35.04%) females. Moreover, there were total 58 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 9 wards. Same as, total 89 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 43 females and 39 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
