Makalu is a Rural Municipality, which is located in Sankhuwasabha district, Province No. 1 of Nepal. Makalu has total 6 wards, which are scattered across 519 square kilometers of geographical area. According to 2011 Census conducted by Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Makalu Rural Municipality had total population of 13,204.
Wardwise Population and Households
As per 2011 population census, Makalu Rural Municipality had total 13,572 population with 6,790 males and 6,782 females. Out of total wards, ward number 5 had the largest population 3,650, while ward number 1 had least number of population with 3,650.
With respect to number of households, Makalu Rural Municipality had total 2,922 households. The ward number 5 had most households with total 772, while ward number 1 had least number of households with total 231 number of households.

In terms of age, the largest population in Makalu Rural Municipality were between 5 and 9 years of age with total 1,901. Gender wise, there were 977 males and 924 females of the same age group. The least populated age group was between 70 and 74 with total 213 population, which consistes of 116 males and 97 females. Literacy, Education Levels & Schooling
There were only 7,153 people fully literate in Makalu Rural Municipality as of 2011 who were able to both read and write, while 593 people were able to read but not write. In percentage while compared to genderwise population, there were inf percent of male were literate, while the percentage of female literacy was inf only.The literacy ratio between male and female population was nan.
Out of total 4,073 population between the age of 5 and 25 as of 2011 in Makalu Rural Municipality, total 2,114 males and 1,959 females were attending the school. Same as, out of total 2,079 population of the same age group who were not attending the school, total 955 male and 1,124 female were not attending teh school. The ratio of male and female who were going to school was 1.08 while the ratio for those who were not attending the school was 0.85.The CBS census also states that 63 males and 74 females did not state whether they were attending school or not.

According to Nepal Government records as of 2017, there were total 4,219 in Makalu Rural Municipality with 2,095 (49.66%) of males and 2,124 (50.34%) females. There were total 48 schools. In average, 88 students were studying in each school.

Population by Language Spoken
Mostly spoken language in Makalu is Yamphu/Yamphe, which is spoken by 3,786 people. The Makalu has people who speak other languages, such as Sherpa, Nepali, Tamang, Kulung, Gurung, Mewahang, Khaling, Rai, Chamling, Limbu, Magar, Maithili, Nachhiring, etc.

According to 2011 census conducted by Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Makalu Rural Municipality was inhabitted by mostly the people of Yamphu caste with total population of 3,451. There were as little as Newar caste with population of as little as 12 in total. People of several other castes who live in Makalu are Sherpa, Tamang, Gurung, Rai, Kulung, Chhetri, Mewahang Bala, Kami, Magar, Damai/Dholi, Brahmin - Hill, Topkegola, Limbu, Bhote, Khaling, Undefined Others, Chamling, Newar, etc. Only the population of castes with above 1,000 population are illustrated in the table.

Similarly, there were 67 people who were blind and 45 people were deaf, while 2 people were both blind and deaf. Moreover, 38 persons had reported of having speech problems. Total 34 people had multiple disabilities.

Household Foundation
Out of total 2922 households in Makalu Rural Municipality, there were 2,577 houses that were founded on mud bonded while 6 houses were cement bonded. Same as, 2 households were reported of being founded on RCC piller, 319houses were founded on wood.
With respect to wall of the houses, 2,220 houses were mud bonded, 18 houses were cement bonded, 75 houses were wood planks bonded, 519 houses were bamboo bonded and 1 houses had unbaked bricks on their outer walls.Rest of the houses were reported of having other types of outer wall, while some of them reported nothing of having the outer wall bonding.

With reference to source of fuel, 2,890 households reported their source of fuel as firewood while 6 households had kerosene as their fuel source. The LP gas was used by 11 households as a source of fuel. Moreover, other sources of fuel were cow dung (0), bio-gas (3), fuel electricity (1), etc.
Same as, total 150 households had reported of having electricity as the source of their household's lighting. The households still using kerosene as source of light were 454, while 1,787 households used solar energy as source of lights. Total 0 households also reported of using bio-gas as a source of light. The ratio of use of electricity as compared to other source of light was 0.05.

out of 2,922 households in Makalu Rural Municipality, 640 houses reported of having no any facility in their household while 2,255 households reported of using at least one facility. Households using at least one facility, such as radio, television, internet, etc. have been illustrated in the table below.Radio was used by the maximum households with total users of 1,920, while MobilePhone was the next mostly used facilities with total household users of 1,344.
Economic Census
According to 2018 Economic Census, there are total 437 establishments in Makalu Rural Municipality that are involved in various economic activities. In those establishments, total 1,148 persons are engaged for the economic activities, as a self-employed or an employee, with total male engagement of 632 and female engagement of 516 persons.In every business, there were an average of 2.63 people engaged with average males are 1.45 and females are 1.18. The ratio of male to female engagement in the establishments are 1.22, which means as many as 1.22 males are enagement in the economic activities per female.
Similarly, the engagement of males were 55.05 percent while the females are 44.95 percent.
