In 2017 election of Mai Municipality (Ilam district), candidate Deepal Kumar Thebe of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 6,048 (46.68%) votes out of total votes of 12,955 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Hem Kumar Karki of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 4,526 (23.82%) of votes. The rest of 4 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 2,381 (9.19) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Bishnu Maya Rimal of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 5,896 (46.32%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Chandra Maya Limbu of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 4,683 (25.14%) of votes and came in second position. Other 2 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 2,150 (8.45) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 211 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 125 (59.24%) males and 86 (40.76%) females. Moreover, there were total 45 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 10 wards. Same as, total 80 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 39 females and 37 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
