In 2017 election of Mahalaxmi Municipality (Lalitpur district), candidate Rameshwor Shrestha of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 7,764 (35.72%) votes out of total votes of 21,734 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Mahesh Khadka of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 6,805 (23.07%) of votes. The rest of 10 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 7,165 (16.48) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Nirmala Thapa of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 8,636 (40.18%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Laxmi Shrestha of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 6,302 (20.92%) of votes and came in second position. Other 6 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 6,556 (15.25) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 265 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 163 (61.51%) males and 102 (38.49%) females. Moreover, there were total 57 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 10 wards. Same as, total 105 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 50 females and 33 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
