In 2017 election of Mahalaxmi Municipality (Dhankuta district), candidate Parshu Ram Nepal of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 4,897 (49.64%) votes out of total votes of 9,866 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Agni Prasad Paudel of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 3,156 (21.38%) of votes. The rest of 4 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 1,813 (9.19) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Manju Kumari Karki (adhikari) of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 4,534 (49.84%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Mahendra Niraula of Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) secured 2,156 (15.82%) of votes and came in second position. Other 2 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 2,407 (13.23) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 183 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 112 (61.20%) males and 71 (38.80%) females. Moreover, there were total 36 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 9 wards. Same as, total 70 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 34 females and 33 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
