In 2017 election of Mahakali Municipality (Darchula district), candidate Hansa Raj Bhatt of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 4,043 (51.02%) votes out of total votes of 7,925 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Nar Singh Chauser of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 3,476 (29.04%) of votes. The rest of 5 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 406 (2.56) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Suna Bohara of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 4,132 (52.60%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Durga Devi Dhami of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 3,374 (28.15%) of votes and came in second position. Other 4 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 349 (2.22) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 143 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 87 (60.84%) males and 56 (39.16%) females. Moreover, there were total 30 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 9 wards. Same as, total 51 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 24 females and 25 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
