In 2017 election of Krishnanagar Municipality (Kapilvastu district), candidate Rajat Pratap Shah of Independent (Ind) secured 7,178 (40.46%) votes out of total votes of 17,743 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Shiv Prasad Kalwar of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) who secured 3,080 (12.36%) of votes. The rest of 19 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 7,485 (21.09) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Sabnam Khatun of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) secured 3,269 (21.57%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Arati Devi Chaudhary of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 2,999 (16.28%) of votes and came in second position. Other 19 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 8,890 (29.32) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 499 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 341 (68.34%) males and 158 (31.66%) females. Moreover, there were total 128 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 12 wards. Same as, total 182 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 76 females and 71 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
