In 2017 election of Kirtipur Municipality (Kathmandu district), candidate Ramesh Maharjan of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 7,360 (34.75%) votes out of total votes of 21,177 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Raj Kumar Nakarmi of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 6,616 (23.18%) of votes. The rest of 13 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 7,201 (17.00) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Saraswoti Rijal of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 6,810 (32.79%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Bimala Bista of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 6,043 (21.91%) of votes and came in second position. Other 6 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 7,915 (19.06) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 263 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 175 (66.54%) males and 88 (33.46%) females. Moreover, there were total 70 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 10 wards. Same as, total 94 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 50 females and 26 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
