In 2017 election of Khatyad Rural Municipality (Mugu district), candidate Ubjan Bahadur Shahi of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 2,307 (33.88%) votes out of total votes of 6,809 and was elected as a Chairman. The first runner-up candidate was Birkha Bahachadur Thapa of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) who secured 2,028 (22.25%) of votes. The rest of 5 candidates for the position of Chairman secured combined 2,474 (18.17) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Vice-Chairman, candidate Jayananda Karki (rawal) of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 2,322 (34.69%) and was elected as a Vice-Chairman, while Sarita Rokaya of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 2,315 (25.68%) of votes and came in second position. Other 3 candidates who contested for Vice-Chairman secured combined 2,056 (15.36) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 182 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 114 (62.64%) males and 68 (37.36%) females. Moreover, there were total 39 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 11 wards. Same as, total 69 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 33 females and 29 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
