In 2017 election of Khandbari Municipality (Sankhuwasabha district), candidate Murari Prasad Khatiwada of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 5,565 (47.62%) votes out of total votes of 11,687 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Mahesh Thapaliya of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 5,131 (29.74%) of votes. The rest of 8 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 991 (4.24) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Degeshwori Shrestha of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 5,493 (47.22%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Nirmala Tamang (basnet) of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 5,208 (30.41%) of votes and came in second position. Other 5 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 932 (4.01) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 204 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 126 (61.76%) males and 78 (38.24%) females. Moreover, there were total 41 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 11 wards. Same as, total 79 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 37 females and 30 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
