In 2017 election of Khandachakra Municipality (Kalikot district), candidate Jasi Prasad Pandey of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 2,205 (39.80%) votes out of total votes of 5,540 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Laxmi Prasad Chaulagain of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) who secured 1,461 (18.86%) of votes. The rest of 6 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 1,874 (16.91) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Bijaya Bista of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 1,945 (36.55%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Ganga Khadka (bogati) of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) secured 1,550 (21.33%) of votes and came in second position. Other 7 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 1,827 (17.16) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 223 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 126 (56.50%) males and 97 (43.50%) females. Moreover, there were total 45 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 11 wards. Same as, total 83 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 44 females and 34 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
