In 2017 election of Katari Municipality (Udayapur district), candidate Gyanendra Shrestha of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 6,909 (35.06%) votes out of total votes of 19,708 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Gyanendra Singh Raut of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 6,735 (25.30%) of votes. The rest of 5 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 6,064 (15.38) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Bhim Kumari Raut of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 7,517 (38.76%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Nirmala Neupane of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 5,887 (21.88%) of votes and came in second position. Other 4 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 5,989 (15.44) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 268 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 161 (60.07%) males and 107 (39.93%) females. Moreover, there were total 57 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 14 wards. Same as, total 100 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 49 females and 49 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
