In 2017 election of Kankai Municipality (Jhapa district), candidate Rajendra Kumar Pokhrel of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 8,416 (47.21%) votes out of total votes of 17,827 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Ekraj Upreti of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 6,197 (23.61%) of votes. The rest of 5 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 3,214 (9.01) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Manju Prasai of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 8,576 (49.25%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Kabita Ghimire of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 6,579 (25.31%) of votes and came in second position. Other 4 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 2,259 (6.49) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 195 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 121 (62.05%) males and 74 (37.95%) females. Moreover, there were total 41 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 9 wards. Same as, total 73 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 35 females and 33 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
