In 2017 election of Kalaiya Sub-Metropolitan City (Bara district), candidate Rajesh Raya Yadav of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 10,903 (26.79%) votes out of total votes of 40,694 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Binod Prasad Shah of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 10,716 (20.77%) of votes. The rest of 14 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 19,075 (23.44) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Rahima Khatun of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 10,538 (26.14%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Pratima Kumari Yadav of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 10,372 (20.40%) of votes and came in second position. Other 9 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 19,401 (24.06) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 818 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 499 (61.00%) males and 319 (39.00%) females. Moreover, there were total 181 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 27 wards. Same as, total 308 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 156 females and 146 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
