In 2017 election of Itahari Sub-Metropolitan City (Sunsari district), candidate Dwarik Lal Chaudhari of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 22,689 (43.20%) votes out of total votes of 52,522 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Rohit Prasad Prasai of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 19,985 (26.57%) of votes. The rest of 13 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 9,848 (9.38) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Laxmi Kumari Gautam of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 21,842 (41.95%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Bimala Siwakoti of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 18,352 (24.83%) of votes and came in second position. Other 12 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 11,871 (11.40) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 562 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 314 (55.87%) males and 248 (44.13%) females. Moreover, there were total 126 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 20 wards. Same as, total 205 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 104 females and 98 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
