In 2017 election of Inaruwa Municipality (Sunsari district), candidate Rajan Mehta of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 10,987 (44.29%) votes out of total votes of 24,805 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Posta Kumar Nepal of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 9,813 (27.42%) of votes. The rest of 10 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 4,005 (8.07) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Jamuna Devi Gautam Pokhrel of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 10,906 (44.51%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Kabita Devi Yadav of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 9,149 (25.84%) of votes and came in second position. Other 6 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 4,447 (9.07) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 258 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 154 (59.69%) males and 104 (40.31%) females. Moreover, there were total 52 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 10 wards. Same as, total 97 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 44 females and 45 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
