In 2017 election of Harion Municipality (Sarlahi district), candidate Ganesh Prasad Prasai of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 6,081 (38.73%) votes out of total votes of 15,700 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Ramesh Budhathoki of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) who secured 5,184 (23.80%) of votes. The rest of 12 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 4,435 (14.12) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Renuka Kumari Paudel of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 5,998 (39.33%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Padma Moktan of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) secured 4,436 (20.88%) of votes and came in second position. Other 8 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 4,816 (15.79) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 307 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 184 (59.93%) males and 123 (40.07%) females. Moreover, there were total 75 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 11 wards. Same as, total 109 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 53 females and 46 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
