In 2017 election of Harinagara Rural Municipality (Sunsari district), candidate Gafar Ansari Miya of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 5,652 (41.94%) votes out of total votes of 13,478 and was elected as a Chairman. The first runner-up candidate was Hem Narayan Mehata Koiri of Snghiy Samajbadi Form Nepal (SanSFN) who secured 3,635 (19.00%) of votes. The rest of 6 candidates for the position of Chairman secured combined 4,191 (15.55) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Vice-Chairman, candidate Rimjhim Kumari Bhagat of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 5,096 (39.02%) and was elected as a Vice-Chairman, while Sunita Devi Mehata of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 2,976 (16.39%) of votes and came in second position. Other 6 candidates who contested for Vice-Chairman secured combined 4,988 (19.10) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 197 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 124 (62.94%) males and 73 (37.06%) females. Moreover, there were total 43 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 7 wards. Same as, total 74 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 34 females and 30 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
