In 2017 election of Hanumannagar Kankalini Municipality (Saptari district), candidate Sailesh Kumar Shah of Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RasJPN) secured 5,720 (35.67%) votes out of total votes of 16,036 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Birendra Majhi of Snghiy Samajbadi Form Nepal (SanSFN) who secured 4,365 (20.06%) of votes. The rest of 10 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 5,951 (18.56) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Sarita Devi Yadav Sipaliya of Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RasJPN) secured 5,417 (34.58%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Siyawati Yadav of Snghiy Samajbadi Form Nepal (SanSFN) secured 4,199 (19.92%) of votes and came in second position. Other 10 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 6,051 (19.31) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 496 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 278 (56.05%) males and 218 (43.95%) females. Moreover, there were total 109 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 14 wards. Same as, total 181 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 97 females and 85 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
