In 2017 election of Gulariya Municipality (Bardiya district), candidate Mukti Nath Yadav of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 6,207 (27.25%) votes out of total votes of 22,775 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Hari Prasad Gyawali of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 5,736 (19.79%) of votes. The rest of 7 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 10,832 (23.78) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Sushila Giri of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 6,364 (30.50%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Tika Kumari Samseli Magar of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 5,685 (20.88%) of votes and came in second position. Other 7 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 8,816 (21.13) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 398 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 235 (59.05%) males and 163 (40.95%) females. Moreover, there were total 87 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 12 wards. Same as, total 150 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 76 females and 67 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
