In 2017 election of Gramthan Rural Municipality (Morang district), candidate Shiv Narayan Majhi Tharu of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 4,720 (32.05%) votes out of total votes of 14,726 and was elected as a Chairman. The first runner-up candidate was Jay Prakash Gachhadar Tharu of Madheshi Janaadhikar Form Nepal (Loktantrik) (MadheJFP (L)) who secured 4,661 (23.97%) of votes. The rest of 6 candidates for the position of Chairman secured combined 5,345 (18.15) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Vice-Chairman, candidate Phul Kumari Chaudhari of Madheshi Janaadhikar Form Nepal (Loktantrik) (MadheJFP (L)) secured 4,259 (29.90%) and was elected as a Vice-Chairman, while Gunawati Devi Tharu of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 4,085 (22.08%) of votes and came in second position. Other 5 candidates who contested for Vice-Chairman secured combined 5,898 (20.71) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 210 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 120 (57.14%) males and 90 (42.86%) females. Moreover, there were total 44 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 7 wards. Same as, total 74 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 38 females and 39 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
