In 2017 election of Gokarneshwor Municipality (Kathmandu district), candidate Santosh Chalise of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 9,009 (45.59%) votes out of total votes of 19,760 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Punya Prasad Chaulagain of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 7,595 (26.40%) of votes. The rest of 9 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 3,156 (7.99) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Shanti Nepal of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 8,598 (43.59%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Shanti Shrestha of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 8,062 (28.46%) of votes and came in second position. Other 4 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 3,066 (7.77) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 204 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 129 (63.24%) males and 75 (36.76%) females. Moreover, there were total 44 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 9 wards. Same as, total 77 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 37 females and 29 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
