In 2017 election of Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City (Sunsari district), candidate Tara Subba of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 20,975 (42.67%) votes out of total votes of 49,160 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Tilak Rai of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 16,102 (22.96%) of votes. The rest of 10 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 12,083 (12.29) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Manju Bhandari Subedi of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 21,256 (48.31%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Shyama Regmi of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 14,917 (22.86%) of votes and came in second position. Other 10 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 7,827 (8.89) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 480 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 278 (57.92%) males and 202 (42.08%) females. Moreover, there were total 107 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 20 wards. Same as, total 180 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 92 females and 77 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
