In 2017 election of Dhankuta Municipality (Dhankuta district), candidate Chintana Tamang of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 4,933 (38.90%) votes out of total votes of 12,680 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Dinesh Rai of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 4,819 (27.36%) of votes. The rest of 6 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 2,928 (11.55) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Sakuntala Basnet of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 5,464 (45.02%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Renu Shrestha of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 3,623 (20.59%) of votes and came in second position. Other 6 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 3,049 (12.56) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 215 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 127 (59.07%) males and 88 (40.93%) females. Moreover, there were total 46 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 10 wards. Same as, total 82 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 39 females and 32 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
