In 2017 election of Dewanganj Rural Municipality (Sunsari district), candidate Lali Prasad Mehta of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 3,630 (26.64%) votes out of total votes of 13,626 and was elected as a Chairman. The first runner-up candidate was Bechan Prasad Mehata of Snghiy Samajbadi Form Nepal (SanSFN) who secured 3,272 (18.96%) of votes. The rest of 10 candidates for the position of Chairman secured combined 6,724 (24.67) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Vice-Chairman, candidate Punita Devi Yadav of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 4,259 (31.31%) and was elected as a Vice-Chairman, while Mahmuda Khatun of Madheshi Janaadhikar Form Nepal (Loktantrik) (MadheJFP (L)) secured 2,896 (16.21%) of votes and came in second position. Other 8 candidates who contested for Vice-Chairman secured combined 6,448 (23.70) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 234 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 146 (62.39%) males and 88 (37.61%) females. Moreover, there were total 49 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 7 wards. Same as, total 86 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 39 females and 38 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
