In 2017 election of Buddhashanti Rural Municipality (Jhapa district), candidate Ramesh Kumar Bhujel of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 7,996 (44.02%) votes out of total votes of 18,163 and was elected as a Chairman. The first runner-up candidate was Tilchan Pathak of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 7,353 (28.11%) of votes. The rest of 6 candidates for the position of Chairman secured combined 2,814 (7.75) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Vice-Chairman, candidate Mira Bhurtel of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 7,457 (41.62%) and was elected as a Vice-Chairman, while Chandra Kala Bhattarai of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 6,804 (26.82%) of votes and came in second position. Other 6 candidates who contested for Vice-Chairman secured combined 3,655 (10.20) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 164 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 105 (64.02%) males and 59 (35.98%) females. Moreover, there were total 36 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 7 wards. Same as, total 63 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 25 females and 24 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
