In 2017 election of Birtamod Municipality (Jhapa district), candidate Dhruv Kumar Shivakoti of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 9,112 (32.95%) votes out of total votes of 27,654 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Jal Kumar Gurung of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 8,217 (22.35%) of votes. The rest of 11 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 10,325 (18.67) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Pabitra Devi Mahatara of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 10,437 (38.30%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Parbata Giri (bharati) of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 9,011 (23.91%) of votes and came in second position. Other 6 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 7,803 (14.32) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 253 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 151 (59.68%) males and 102 (40.32%) females. Moreover, there were total 60 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 10 wards. Same as, total 88 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 44 females and 40 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
