Wardwise Population and Households
As per 2011 population census, Birgunj Metropolitan City had total 240,922 population with 127,227 males and 113,695 females. Out of total wards, ward number 16 had the largest population 20,584, while ward number 9 had least number of population with 20,584.
With respect to number of households, Birgunj Metropolitan City had total 39,286 households. The ward number 16 had most households with total 3,591, while ward number 5 had least number of households with total 603 number of households.
As illustrated in the chart, the ratio of male to female population was 1.12, which indicates that Birgunj Metropolitan City had -12 percent lower males as compared to the females. Same as, the population to household ratio was 6.13, which means that in average 6.13 family members lived in each household.
Absentee Population

Gender wise, top 5 most age groups male population were between 5 and 9 (17,299), between 10 and 14 (16,657), between 15 and 19 (14,416), below 4 (12,589), and between 20 and 24 (11,764), with total population of 72,725. In contrast, bottom 5 least age group male population were above 75 (913), between 70 and 74 (1,337), between 65 and 69 (1,883),between 60 and 64 (2,957), and between 55 and 59 (3,218), with total population of 10,308. With regards to female population, top 5 age groups females were between 5 and 9 (15,754), between 10 and 14 (14,751), below 4 (12,037), between 15 and 19 (11,258), and between 20 and 24 (10,582), with total population of 64,382. In contrast, bottom 5 least age group male population were above 75 (843), between 70 and 74 (1,001), between 65 and 69 (1,579),between 60 and 64 (2,406), and between 55 and 59 (2,844), with total population of 8,673.
The population with age-group 70 to 74 had male to female ratio of 1.34, which states that this age group had maximum males as compared to females. Similarly, age-group 30 to 34 had most female population as compared to male population with male to female ratio of 0.96. The age-groups 70 to 74, 15 to 19, 50 to 54, 60 to 64, 40 to 44, 65 to 69, 45 to 49, 10 to 14, 55 to 59, 20 to 24, 35 to 39, 5 to 9, above 75, below 4, 25 to 29 had majority of male population while age-groups 30 to 34 had majority of female population as per male-female ratios. Moreover, age-groups had eqivalent or almost equal numbers of male and female population with male-female ratios of 1.

Population Ratios
There were 59.89 % (144,279 ) of independent population, the working age people between ages of 15 and 64 years. The dependent children, ages below 15 years, were 36.98 % with total number of 89,087. The dependent elderly population, aged 65 and above were 3.14 % with total number of 7,556. As such, total dependent population including children and elderly people were 40.11 with total number of 96,643
There were 58,970 women of child-bearing age-group of 15 to 49 years. Same as, the todlers or children of 4 years or below were 24,626. The ratio of woman of child-bearing age and the number of todlers state that, approximately 418 children were born per 1,000 women. Population by Language Spoken
Mostly spoken language in Birgunj is Bhojpuri, which is spoken by 189,401 people. The Birgunj has people who speak other languages, such as Nepali, Maithili, Urdu, Rajsthani, Newar, Tharu, Hindi, Rai, Uranw/Urau, Bangla, Tamang, Punjabi, Magar, Gurung, Bajjika, Sherpa, Doteli, Ghale, Limbu, Sindhi, Santhali, Avadhi, Danuwar, Thakali, Dhimal, etc.

According to 2011 census conducted by Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Birgunj Metropolitan City was inhabitted by mostly the people of Muslim caste with total population of 43,569. There were as little as Badi caste with population of as little as 11 in total. People of several other castes who live in Birgunj are Kurmi, Yadav, Kanu, Teli, Brahmin - Hill, Dhanuk, Tharu, Sonar, Kalwar, Chamar/Harijan/Ram, Koiri/Kushwaha, Newar, Marwadi, Kayastha, Kathbaniyan, Chhetri, Dusadh/Pasawan/Pasi, Brahmin - Tarai, Baraee, Mallaha, Terai Others, Nuniya, Rajput, Lohar, Tatma/Tatwa, Hajam/Thakur, Dhobi, Sanyasi/Dashnami, Kumal, Musahar, Kumhar, Rai, Tamang, Halkhor, Magar, Mali, Dom, Bangali, Kahar, Natuwa, Bin, Thakuri, Kewat, Badhaee, Rajbhar, Haluwai, Yakkha, Jhangad/Dhagar, Kami, Punjabi/Shikh, Gurung, Majhi, Sudhi, Damai/Dholi, Gaderi/Bhedhar, Dhunia, Limbu, Undefined Others, Sherpa, Gharti/Bhujel, Ghale, Sarki, Foreigner, Danuwar, Satar/Santhal, Janajati Others, Rajdhob, Bantar/Sardar, Dhimal, Sunuwar, Thakali, Dalit Others, Bhote, Rajbansi, Badi, etc. Only the population of castes with above 1,000 population are illustrated in the table.
Top five castes of people in Birgunj Metropolitan City are Muslim (43,569), Kurmi (23,192), Yadav (15,614), Kanu (15,417) and Teli (8,762) with total population of 106,554, which forms 44.23 percent out of total population of 240,922 in Birgunj Metropolitan City.Population by Disability
Similarly, there were 388 people who were blind and 165 people were deaf, while 35 people were both blind and deaf. Moreover, 211 persons had reported of having speech problems. Total 119 people had multiple disabilities.

Household Foundation
With respect to wall of the houses, 1,454 houses were mud bonded, 25,844 houses were cement bonded, 492 houses were wood planks bonded, 10,574 houses were bamboo bonded and 48 houses had unbaked bricks on their outer walls.Rest of the houses were reported of having other types of outer wall, while some of them reported nothing of having the outer wall bonding.
There were several types of house roofs reported. Total 3,889 houses were reported of having thatch roofs while 2,108 houses had galvanized roofs. Similarly, 8,648 houses had roof of tile, 23,177 houses had RCC roofs, 295 houses had roof of woods while 0 houses were reported having roof of mud. As per 2011 CBS census, some of the houses had other types of roofs while some didn't report about the roof structure.
With respect to the toilets, 14,308 out of 39,286 houses didn't report of having a private toilet for their households. Nevertheless, 19,779 houses were reported of having flush toilet while 4,683 houses reported having ordinary toilets.
Utilities
With reference to source of fuel, 22,607 households reported their source of fuel as firewood while 480 households had kerosene as their fuel source. The LP gas was used by 14,708 households as a source of fuel. Moreover, other sources of fuel were cow dung (898), bio-gas (27), fuel electricity (28), etc.
Same as, total 35,728 households had reported of having electricity as the source of their household's lighting. The households still using kerosene as source of light were 2,780, while 71 households used solar energy as source of lights. Total 0 households also reported of using bio-gas as a source of light. The ratio of use of electricity as compared to other source of light was 0.91.
Facilities
Economic Census
According to 2018 Economic Census, there are total 8,811 establishments in Birgunj Metropolitan City that are involved in various economic activities. In those establishments, total 32,910 persons are engaged for the economic activities, as a self-employed or an employee, with total male engagement of 27,242 and female engagement of 5,668 persons.In every business, there were an average of 3.74 people engaged with average males are 3.09 and females are 0.64. The ratio of male to female engagement in the establishments are 4.81, which means as many as 4.81 males are enagement in the economic activities per female.
Similarly, the engagement of males were 82.78 percent while the females are 17.22 percent.
