In 2017 election of Belaka Municipality (Udayapur district), candidate Durga Kumar Thapa of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 5,818 (37.49%) votes out of total votes of 15,520 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Ashok Karki of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 5,266 (24.68%) of votes. The rest of 4 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 4,436 (14.29) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Raj Kumari Chaudhary of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 6,131 (39.81%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Dipa Kumari Rai of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 5,286 (24.55%) of votes and came in second position. Other 4 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 3,982 (12.93) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 194 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 116 (59.79%) males and 78 (40.21%) females. Moreover, there were total 41 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 9 wards. Same as, total 71 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 35 females and 35 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
