In 2017 election of Basbariya Rural Municipality (Sarlahi district), candidate Ram Ayodhya Yadav of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 2,255 (27.57%) votes out of total votes of 8,178 and was elected as a Chairman. The first runner-up candidate was Ram Sihayan Raya of Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RasJPN) who secured 2,005 (19.22%) of votes. The rest of 13 candidates for the position of Chairman secured combined 3,918 (23.95) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Vice-Chairman, candidate Rina Kumari Yadav of Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RasJPN) secured 2,544 (34.00%) and was elected as a Vice-Chairman, while Indra Nilam Yadav of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 2,140 (21.34%) of votes and came in second position. Other 5 candidates who contested for Vice-Chairman secured combined 2,798 (18.70) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 189 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 122 (64.55%) males and 67 (35.45%) females. Moreover, there were total 41 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 6 wards. Same as, total 67 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 29 females and 30 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
