In 2017 election of Baraha Municipality (Sunsari district), candidate Nilam Khanal of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 14,446 (47.77%) votes out of total votes of 30,242 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Baburam Bista of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 11,489 (25.71%) of votes. The rest of 6 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 4,307 (7.12) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Kamala Magar of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 14,609 (48.50%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Puja Kumari Dhami of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 11,359 (25.39%) of votes and came in second position. Other 4 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 4,155 (6.90) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 297 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 180 (60.61%) males and 117 (39.39%) females. Moreover, there were total 68 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 11 wards. Same as, total 112 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 57 females and 46 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
