Balwa is a Municipality, which is located in Mahottari district, Province No. 2 of Nepal. Balwa has total 11 wards, which are scattered across 44 square kilometers of geographical area. According to 2011 Census conducted by Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Balwa Municipality had total population of 42,341.
Wardwise Population and Households
As per 2011 population census, Balwa Municipality had total 42,341 population with 20,632 males and 21,709 females. Out of total wards, ward number 11 had the largest population 5,696, while ward number 3 had least number of population with 5,696.
With respect to number of households, Balwa Municipality had total 7,661 households. The ward number 11 had most households with total 977, while ward number 3 had least number of households with total 448 number of households.
As illustrated in the chart, the ratio of male to female population was 0.95, which indicates that Balwa Municipality had 5 percent lower males as compared to the females. Same as, the population to household ratio was 5.53, which means that in average 5.53 family members lived in each household.

In terms of age, the largest population in Balwa Municipality were between 5 and 9 years of age with total 6,406. Gender wise, there were 3,229 males and 3,177 females of the same age group. The least populated age group was above 75 with total 590 population, which consistes of 309 males and 281 females. Top 5 most populated age groups were between 5 and 9 (6,406), between 10 and 14 (6,079), below 4 (4,982), between 15 and 19 (3,600), between 20 and 24 (2,948) with total population of 24,015. The population with age-group 70 to 74 had male to female ratio of 1.34, which states that this age group had maximum males as compared to females. Similarly, age-group 30 to 34 had most female population as compared to male population with male to female ratio of 0.66. As illustrated in the pie-chart, overall ratio of male to female population in Balwa Municipality as per 2011 population census was 0.95 with 48.73% (20,632) of males and 51.27% (21,709) of females.
There were 52.97 % (22,426 ) of independent population, the working age people between ages of 15 and 64 years. The dependent children, ages below 15 years, were 41.25 % with total number of 17,467. The dependent elderly population, aged 65 and above were 5.78 % with total number of 2,448. As such, total dependent population including children and elderly people were 47.03 with total number of 19,915
There were 9,873 women of child-bearing age-group of 15 to 49 years. Same as, the todlers or children of 4 years or below were 4,982. Literacy, Education Levels & Schooling
There were only 15,727 people fully literate in Balwa Municipality as of 2011 who were able to both read and write, while 720 people were able to read but not write. In percentage while compared to genderwise population, there were inf percent of male were literate, while the percentage of female literacy was inf only.The literacy ratio between male and female population was nan.
Out of total 9,799 population between the age of 5 and 25 as of 2011 in Balwa Municipality, total 5,514 males and 4,285 females were attending the school. Same as, out of total 9,093 population of the same age group who were not attending the school, total 3,822 male and 5,271 female were not attending teh school. The ratio of male and female who were going to school was 1.29 while the ratio for those who were not attending the school was 0.73.The CBS census also states that 164 males and 187 females did not state whether they were attending school or not.
Grade 1-12 Students & Schools
According to Nepal Government records as of 2017, there were total 17,333 in Balwa Municipality with 8,548 (49.32%) of males and 8,785 (50.68%) females. There were total 32 schools. In average, 542 students were studying in each school.

Population by Language Spoken
Mostly spoken language in Balwa is Maithili, which is spoken by 36,043 people. The Balwa has people who speak other languages, such as Urdu, Nepali, Magahi, Bhojpuri, Hindi, etc.

There were as little as Chhetri caste with population of as little as 13 in total. People of several other castes who live in Balwa are Muslim, Dhanuk, Koiri/Kushwaha, Sudhi, Musahar, Chamar/Harijan/Ram, Teli, Dusadh/Pasawan/Pasi, Sonar, Brahmin - Tarai, Khatwe, Baraee, Kurmi, Dhunia, Mallaha, Hajam/Thakur, Dhobi, Nuniya, Brahmin - Hill, Kalwar, Haluwai, Lohar, Kanu, Kumhar, Bangali, Kami, Kewat, Dom, Kathbaniyan, Sanyasi/Dashnami, Tatma/Tatwa, Mali, Amat, Natuwa, Kayastha, Newar, Terai Others, Undefined Others, Badhaee, Rajput, Majhi, Chhetri, Halkhor, etc. Only the population of castes with above 1,000 population are illustrated in the table.

Out of total population of 42,341, there were total 396 (0.94%) disabled persons in Balwa Municipality with 249 (62.88%) males and 147 (37.12%) females. The physically disabled persons were 136, while mentally disabled people were 35 and intellectually disabled were 12.
Similarly, there were 72 people who were blind and 31 people were deaf, while 9 people were both blind and deaf. Moreover, 79 persons had reported of having speech problems. Total 22 people had multiple disabilities.

Household Foundation
Out of total 7661 households in Balwa Municipality, there were 373 houses that were founded on mud bonded while 1,863 houses were cement bonded. Same as, 163 households were reported of being founded on RCC piller, 5,059houses were founded on wood.
With respect to wall of the houses, 361 houses were mud bonded, 1,961 houses were cement bonded, 88 houses were wood planks bonded, 5,202 houses were bamboo bonded and 10 houses had unbaked bricks on their outer walls.Rest of the houses were reported of having other types of outer wall, while some of them reported nothing of having the outer wall bonding.
There were several types of house roofs reported. Total 1,208 houses were reported of having thatch roofs while 30 houses had galvanized roofs. Similarly, 5,235 houses had roof of tile, 1,031 houses had RCC roofs, 98 houses had roof of woods while 0 houses were reported having roof of mud. With reference to source of fuel, 4,360 households reported their source of fuel as firewood while 58 households had kerosene as their fuel source. The LP gas was used by 41 households as a source of fuel. Moreover, other sources of fuel were cow dung (2,908), bio-gas (31), fuel electricity (0), etc.
Same as, total 4,746 households had reported of having electricity as the source of their household's lighting. The households still using kerosene as source of light were 2,812, while 68 households used solar energy as source of lights. Total 0 households also reported of using bio-gas as a source of light. The ratio of use of electricity as compared to other source of light was 0.62.

out of 7,661 households in Balwa Municipality, 1,568 houses reported of having no any facility in their household while 5,934 households reported of using at least one facility. Households using at least one facility, such as radio, television, internet, etc. have been illustrated in the table below.Bicycle was used by the maximum households with total users of 4,608, while MobilePhone was the next mostly used facilities with total household users of 3,902.
Economic Census
According to 2018 Economic Census, there are total 1,284 establishments in Balwa Municipality that are involved in various economic activities. In those establishments, total 2,189 persons are engaged for the economic activities, as a self-employed or an employee, with total male engagement of 1,648 and female engagement of 541 persons.In every business, there were an average of 1.70 people engaged with average males are 1.28 and females are 0.42. The ratio of male to female engagement in the establishments are 3.05, which means as many as 3.05 males are enagement in the economic activities per female.
Similarly, the engagement of males were 75.29 percent while the females are 24.71 percent.
