Melung is a Rural Municipality, which is located in Dolakha district, Province No. 3 of Nepal. Melung has total 7 wards, which are scattered across 87 square kilometers of geographical area. According to 2011 Census conducted by Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Melung Rural Municipality had total population of 20,210.
Wardwise Population and Households
As per 2011 population census, Melung Rural Municipality had total 20,210 population with 9,015 males and 11,195 females. Out of total wards, ward number 1 had the largest population 4,573, while ward number 2 had least number of population with 4,573.
With respect to number of households, Melung Rural Municipality had total 4,841 households. The ward number 1 had most households with total 1,109, while ward number 2 had least number of households with total 474 number of households.
As illustrated in the chart, the ratio of male to female population was 0.81, which indicates that Melung Rural Municipality had 19 percent lower males as compared to the females. Same as, the population to household ratio was 4.17, which means that in average 4.17 family members lived in each household.
Absentee Population
As of 2011, 667 population in Melung Rural Municipality were absent from their households, which equals to 3.30 percent of the total population. In terms of age, the largest population in Melung Rural Municipality were between 10 and 14 years of age with total 2,955. Gender wise, there were 1,429 males and 1,526 females of the same age group. The least populated age group was between 70 and 74 with total 465 population, which consistes of 208 males and 257 females. The population with age-group 60 to 64 had male to female ratio of 1.02, which states that this age group had maximum males as compared to females. Similarly, age-group 30 to 34 had most female population as compared to male population with male to female ratio of 0.52. There were 56.92 % (11,503 ) of independent population, the working age people between ages of 15 and 64 years. The dependent children, ages below 15 years, were 34.33 % with total number of 6,938. The dependent elderly population, aged 65 and above were 8.75 % with total number of 1,769. There were 5,334 women of child-bearing age-group of 15 to 49 years. Same as, the todlers or children of 4 years or below were 1,709. The ratio of woman of child-bearing age and the number of todlers state that, approximately 320 children were born per 1,000 women. This number is also roughly used as fertility levels when direct measures of births are not available.

Literacy, Education Levels & Schooling
There were only 11,056 people fully literate in Melung Rural Municipality as of 2011 who were able to both read and write, while 907 people were able to read but not write. In percentage while compared to genderwise population, there were inf percent of male were literate, while the percentage of female literacy was inf only.The literacy ratio between male and female population was nan.
Out of total 6,471 population between the age of 5 and 25 as of 2011 in Melung Rural Municipality, total 3,133 males and 3,338 females were attending the school. Same as, out of total 1,696 population of the same age group who were not attending the school, total 609 male and 1,087 female were not attending teh school. The ratio of male and female who were going to school was 0.94 while the ratio for those who were not attending the school was 0.56.The CBS census also states that 91 males and 172 females did not state whether they were attending school or not.
Grade 1-12 Students & Schools
According to Nepal Government records as of 2017, there were total 7,349 in Melung Rural Municipality with 3,531 (48.05%) of males and 3,818 (51.95%) females. There were total 50 schools. In average, 147 students were studying in each school.

Population by Language Spoken
Mostly spoken language in Melung is Nepali, which is spoken by 15,896 people. The Melung has people who speak other languages, such as Tamang, Thami, Magar, Newar, etc.

According to 2011 census conducted by Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Melung Rural Municipality was inhabitted by mostly the people of Chhetri caste with total population of 8,673. There were as little as Undefined Others caste with population of as little as 14 in total. People of several other castes who live in Melung are Tamang, Newar, Brahmin - Hill, Magar, Kami, Sarki, Damai/Dholi, Gharti/Bhujel, Sanyasi/Dashnami, Thami, Undefined Others, etc. Only the population of castes with above 1,000 population are illustrated in the table.
Top five castes of people in Melung Rural Municipality are Chhetri (8,673), Tamang (3,849), Newar (1,765), Brahmin - Hill (1,586) and Magar (1,078) with total population of 16,951, which forms 83.87 percent out of total population of 20,210 in Melung Rural Municipality.Population by Disability
Out of total population of 20,210, there were total 607 (3.00%) disabled persons in Melung Rural Municipality with 316 (52.06%) males and 291 (47.94%) females. The physically disabled persons were 242, while mentally disabled people were 37 and intellectually disabled were 15.
Similarly, there were 88 people who were blind and 94 people were deaf, while 24 people were both blind and deaf. Moreover, 80 persons had reported of having speech problems. Total 27 people had multiple disabilities.

Household Foundation
Out of total 4841 households in Melung Rural Municipality, there were 4,757 houses that were founded on mud bonded while 23 houses were cement bonded. Same as, 2 households were reported of being founded on RCC piller, 32houses were founded on wood.
With respect to wall of the houses, 4,697 houses were mud bonded, 67 houses were cement bonded, 9 houses were wood planks bonded, 27 houses were bamboo bonded and 0 houses had unbaked bricks on their outer walls.Rest of the houses were reported of having other types of outer wall, while some of them reported nothing of having the outer wall bonding.
There were several types of house roofs reported. Total 508 houses were reported of having thatch roofs while 2,860 houses had galvanized roofs. Similarly, 1,369 houses had roof of tile, 13 houses had RCC roofs, 46 houses had roof of woods while 0 houses were reported having roof of mud. As per 2011 CBS census, some of the houses had other types of roofs while some didn't report about the roof structure.
With respect to the toilets, 2,250 out of 4,841 houses didn't report of having a private toilet for their households. Nevertheless, 1,468 houses were reported of having flush toilet while 1,105 houses reported having ordinary toilets.

With reference to source of fuel, 4,764 households reported their source of fuel as firewood while 16 households had kerosene as their fuel source. The LP gas was used by 17 households as a source of fuel. Moreover, other sources of fuel were cow dung (0), bio-gas (21), fuel electricity (1), etc.
Same as, total 3,852 households had reported of having electricity as the source of their household's lighting. The households still using kerosene as source of light were 801, while 156 households used solar energy as source of lights. Total 0 households also reported of using bio-gas as a source of light. The ratio of use of electricity as compared to other source of light was 0.80.

out of 4,841 households in Melung Rural Municipality, 850 houses reported of having no any facility in their household while 3,866 households reported of using at least one facility. Households using at least one facility, such as radio, television, internet, etc. have been illustrated in the table below.Radio was used by the maximum households with total users of 3,505, while MobilePhone was the next mostly used facilities with total household users of 2,463.
Economic Census
According to 2018 Economic Census, there are total 537 establishments in Melung Rural Municipality that are involved in various economic activities. In those establishments, total 1,588 persons are engaged for the economic activities, as a self-employed or an employee, with total male engagement of 816 and female engagement of 772 persons.In every business, there were an average of 2.96 people engaged with average males are 1.52 and females are 1.44. The ratio of male to female engagement in the establishments are 1.06, which means as many as 1.06 males are enagement in the economic activities per female.
Similarly, the engagement of males were 51.39 percent while the females are 48.61 percent.
