In 2017 election of Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City (Kailali district), candidate Nrip Bahadur Bad of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 14,324 (29.99%) votes out of total votes of 47,766 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Gopal Hamal of Independent (Ind) who secured 11,527 (18.56%) of votes. The rest of 9 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 21,915 (22.94) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Sushila Mishra (bhatt) of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 17,408 (39.05%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Rukmani Devkota of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 12,763 (20.59%) of votes and came in second position. Other 9 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 14,405 (16.16) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 496 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 291 (58.67%) males and 205 (41.33%) females. Moreover, there were total 111 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 19 wards. Same as, total 187 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 97 females and 79 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
