In 2017 election of Chhayanath Rara Municipality (Mugu district), candidate Hari Jung Shahi of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 3,560 (50.02%) votes out of total votes of 7,117 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Jit Bahadur Malla of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 3,441 (32.23%) of votes. The rest of 7 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 116 (0.81) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Suntala Rokaya of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 3,230 (50.41%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Sur Bahadur Budha of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) secured 2,973 (30.85%) of votes and came in second position. Other 1 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 205 (1.60) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 200 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 121 (60.50%) males and 79 (39.50%) females. Moreover, there were total 40 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 14 wards. Same as, total 76 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 38 females and 34 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
