In 2017 election of Badhaiyatal Rural Municipality (Bardiya district), candidate Lal Bahadur Shrestha of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 8,198 (38.16%) votes out of total votes of 21,486 and was elected as a Chairman. The first runner-up candidate was Lallu Ram Tharu of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) who secured 6,896 (23.23%) of votes. The rest of 4 candidates for the position of Chairman secured combined 6,392 (14.87) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Vice-Chairman, candidate Deepa Kumari Gautam of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 8,783 (41.49%) and was elected as a Vice-Chairman, while Radha Acharya of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) secured 6,471 (21.60%) of votes and came in second position. Other 5 candidates who contested for Vice-Chairman secured combined 5,917 (13.97) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 237 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 137 (57.81%) males and 100 (42.19%) females. Moreover, there were total 50 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 9 wards. Same as, total 88 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 44 females and 42 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
