In 2017 election of Nepalgunj Sub-Metropolitan City (Banke district), candidate Dhawal Shamsher Jung Bahadur Rana of Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) secured 12,515 (29.90%) votes out of total votes of 41,853 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Suresh Kumar Kanodiya of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 8,730 (16.06%) of votes. The rest of 14 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 20,608 (24.62) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Uma Thapa of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 10,731 (25.89%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Rama Rani Gupta of Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) secured 8,924 (17.10%) of votes and came in second position. Other 8 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 21,800 (26.29) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 774 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 456 (58.91%) males and 318 (41.09%) females. Moreover, there were total 172 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 23 wards. Same as, total 302 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 144 females and 130 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
