In 2017 election of Kapilvastu Municipality (Kapilvastu district), candidate Kiran Singh of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 9,254 (39.47%) votes out of total votes of 23,445 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Ram Das Gupta of Independent (Ind) who secured 5,631 (17.22%) of votes. The rest of 8 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 8,560 (18.26) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Laxmi Gupta Sav of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 8,865 (39.60%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Basudev Prasad Kasaudhan of Independent (Ind) secured 4,717 (15.09%) of votes and came in second position. Other 13 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 8,805 (19.67) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 364 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 234 (64.29%) males and 130 (35.71%) females. Moreover, there were total 75 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 12 wards. Same as, total 145 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 63 females and 56 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
