In 2017 election of Banganga Municipality (Kapilvastu district), candidate Mangal Prasad Tharu of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 15,738 (48.54%) votes out of total votes of 32,426 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Bimala Ghimire of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 15,278 (31.72%) of votes. The rest of 9 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 1,410 (2.17) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Chakra Pani Aryal of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 15,893 (53.54%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Top Narayan Belbase of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) secured 12,268 (26.92%) of votes and came in second position. Other 7 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 1,526 (2.57) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 259 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 160 (61.78%) males and 99 (38.22%) females. Moreover, there were total 64 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 11 wards. Same as, total 95 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 45 females and 35 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
